EGERDER
Ege Geriatrics Association

The Ege Geriatrics Association was founded on March 10, 2008, under the chairmanship of Prof. Dr. Fehmi Akçiçek. Our association aims to support the healthy, successful, and active aging of elderly individuals; to increase their resilience, ensure their active participation in social life, strengthen intergenerational communication and social networks, and encourage them to contribute to the quality of life, well-being, and prosperity of elderly individuals by promoting their knowledge and experience in social life. We conduct solution-oriented studies to achieve this goal.

Our association operates with a rights-based, multi-dimensional, and holistic perspective; policy development for policymakers and implementers, and raising social awareness regarding active and healthy aging are among our objectives.

The areas of focus for our association include: Elderly Rights, Active and Healthy Aging, Age-Friendly Society and City, Lifelong Learning, Elderly Health and Chronic Diseases, Elder Neglect and Abuse, Exclusion, Social Inclusion, Home Health and Care, and Palliative Care. Our work has focused on elderly individuals, their relatives, caregivers, and policymakers and implementers.

Our association collaborates with Izmir Metropolitan Municipality, universities, the Provincial Directorate of Family and Social Services, Izmir Provincial Directorate of Health, district municipalities, and NGOs working in the field.

In this context, we partner with Izmir Metropolitan Municipality, Karşıyaka, Balçova, Güzelbahçe, and Seferihisar Municipalities through cooperation protocols signed for services and activities for elderly individuals. Our association is a member of the "Walking Towards the Same Goal" Group, which operates nationwide, and the Izmir City Council, and is among the founders of the Izmir City Council Healthy Aging and Elderly Policies Working Group. Within the framework of the cooperation agreement signed with Izmir Metropolitan Municipality, we are a member of the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Advanced Age Science and Advisory Board and carry out joint projects.

Our Activities

Our association organizes Izmir Advanced Age Symposiums in cooperation with Izmir Metropolitan Municipality, with the participation of local governments, health and social service institutions, universities, NGOs, academics, and experts. The symposiums, which address the demands and problems of elderly individuals from a multifaceted perspective (architecture, health, social services, and social policy), feature sessions where current scientific studies are presented alongside local experiences and research, and include social programs with the participation of artists and writers such as Yıldız Kenter, Filiz Akın, Muzaffer İzgü, Cezmi Baskın, Nurhan Damcıoğlu, and Hale Soygazi, attracting considerable interest.

The first Izmir Advanced Age Symposium, held in 2008, successively addressed the problems and demands of the elderly with themes such as "A broad perspective on the demands of the growing elderly population," "An Advanced Age-Friendly City: Izmir," "Fragile elderly," "Living with an aging body," "Home life in old age," "Active aging," "Palliative care," "Forensic, social and medical emergencies," and "Enjoyable aging," contributing to the formation of local and national policies and action plans. The symposium gained an international dimension in 2017, and successively addressed the themes of "Social life and care in old age," "Social exclusion and old age," and "I am in life," culminating in the 4th International and 13th National Izmir Advanced Age Symposium in 2025 with the theme "Age-Friendly Izmir." The 1st Enjoyable Aging Fair and Congress, held in 2007 with the theme "I'm Enjoying Myself," and the 2nd in 2020... The International Izmir Enjoyable Aging Fair and Congress, the PAL Expocare Elderly Care and Healthy Aging Fair in 2026, and the PAN Geriatrics Symposium are among the fairs and congresses in which the association is a stakeholder.

Other events include: “Drug Treatment in Chronic Diseases in Advanced Age”, the International SARS-coV-2 Pandemic and Elderly Health Symposium in 2020, the Digital Equality in Advanced Age Symposium, the Active Aging and Urban Life Symposium, the Palliative Care Workshop at Home and in Hospital, the Hospice Workshop, the Medical Testament Workshop, the Elderly-Friendly Healthcare Institutions Workshop, the Barrier-Free Housing and Living Spaces for Independent Living Workshop, and the Aging in Place Spring Workshop. The following are among the scientific studies in which the association is a stakeholder: “Local Governments and Elderly Policies Workshop”, “Elderly Rights and Social Inclusion Workshop”, Advanced Age Action Plan Indicator Workshop, “Elderly Care Systems Workshop”, “Artificial Intelligence Technologies in Old Age Workshop”.

The Elderly-Friendly Healthcare Institutions Project, İzmir Provincial Health Directorate Palyat İzmir Project, Active Aging with Smart Systems Project (İZKA 2017), “I Am Elderly-Friendly Project”, awareness training projects, #weareathome (conducted during the Coronavirus pandemic), and EQUIP II (European Education, Competences and Qualifications in Home Care for Older People II) are projects that the association has conducted or is a stakeholder in.
The Aegean Geriatrics Association, in line with the United Nations goals for active and healthy aging and the lifelong approach, collaborates with the Geriatrics Department of Ege University Faculty of Medicine to support healthy, successful, and active aging for individuals aged 60 and over. This collaboration includes the "Third Age University" (UA3) program for individuals over 60. Launched in 2016 as a social responsibility project of the Geriatrics Department of Ege University Faculty of Medicine, with contributions from our association, the Aegean Third Age University has since included Third Age Universities from Izmir Metropolitan Municipality, Karşıyaka, Balçova, Güzelbahçe, and Seferihisar Municipalities, which have signed protocols with our association. The number of Third Age Universities (UA3) is increasing daily with new participants and applications.
Our association also prepares and distributes Healthy Aging Handbooks, press releases, brochures, etc., to the public.
